Can these Santa Claus Sugar Cookies be any cuter? Can ANYTHING be cuter than these Santa cookies?

We’re on week two of our month-long holiday extravaganza and every time I post a new Christmas craft or fun food such as this marshmallow snowman or this reindeer chocolate bark, I am blown away by how adorable they are. And then the next one comes along and easily topples the previous as my favorite!

These Santa cookies definitely takes the cake as the ultimate Christmas goodies. They’re made with refrigerated sugar cookie dough and decorated with fondant and buttercream frosting for holiday cookies that are both tasty and pretty.

The recipe below yields about 16 cookies but I suggest doubling the batch as these are sure to be a hit with adults and kids alike. They’re a fabulous addition to your dessert table and make great holiday gifts, too!

How to Make Santa Claus Sugar Cookies

Like our snowman sugar cookies, this Santa version is made of refrigerated sugar cookie which you can swap with your favorite from-scratch if you like. If you want to skip the baking altogether, you can also use pre-made from your favorite bakery.

You can also use commercial buttercream frosting or make homemade following the recipe below.

Ingredients

sugar cookies, red fondant, decorating icing, and butter for making Santa sugar cookies

  • sugar cookie recipe or refrigerated cookie dough (16.5-ounce package yields 16 cookies)
  • Red fondant
  • buttercream frosting
  • Red decorating frosting
  • Black decorating frosting

Instructions:

cut out sugar cookie dough on parchment-lined baking sheet

Using a rolling pin, roll the refrigerated dough (or your cookie dough from scratch) to about 1/4-inch thick. With a cookie cutter, cut into circles.

Arrange dough in a single layer on a baking sheet and bake in the oven according to recipe or package directions. Allow baked cookies to cool completely before decorating.

Sprinkle some cornstarch on a clean working surface, as well as on the rolling pin. Roll out the fondant to about ¼-inch thick.

Using the same size cutter for the cookies, cut out 6 fondant circles.
